Anosike headed to sports hall of Fame
Former Anderson County High School girls basketball Coach Nicky Anosike will be inducted into the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame as part of its 2025 class later this summer.
The induction ceremony is set for Aug. 21 at the Knoxville Expo Center, with proceeds benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley.
The event will begin at 5 p.m., and tickets are $200 per person or $3,000 for a table of 10. Former Tennessee men’s basketball player Ron Slay is scheduled to serve as keynote speaker.
Anosike starred for the Lady Vols from 2005-08 under legendary Coach Pat Summitt, helping Tennessee capture back-to-back national championships in 2007 and 2008. She was named to the 2005 SEC All-Freshman Team and played in 146 games during her career, averaging 7.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.
Following her college career, Anosike was selected in the second round of the 2008 WNBA Draft (No. 16 overall) by Minnesota. She earned a spot on the 2008 WNBA All-Rookie Team, was named a WNBA All-Star in 2009, and was selected to the league’s all-defensive team that same season.
She played for the Lynx (2008-10), Washington (2011) and Los Angeles (2012).
Anosike also won two gold medals with Team USA, capturing titles at the 2007 Pan American Games and the 2005 FIBA U-19 World Cup.
She will be inducted alongside Ken Johnson (a former Knoxville College football player who played for the Buffalo Bills), Dr. Jerry Punch (a longtime ESPN commentator and former North Carolina State player under Lou Holtz), Bryan Brown (a longtime track and cross country coach and athletic administrator), and Adam Brock, who played college tennis at Virginia before becoming the pro at Cedar Bluff Racquet Club.
Also entering the Hall of Fame next month are Charles Fondren, boxer Frankie Randall, basketball coach Conchita Owenby and golfer Gary Toulson.
