Clinton project targets need for daycare

With the Anderson County Fair wrapped up, contractors are continuing renovations on converting the former National Guard Armory at Jaycee Park into a daycare for children.

Clinton City Manager Roger Houck gave the update at the Monday, Aug. 25, City Council meeting. Even by that point, he said a good portion of the old structure the city was not planning to use was demolished, and they would be “ready to start putting stuff back” in the next 35 to 40 days.

Houck said the project got additional funding by working with Clinton City Schools, Anderson County Economic Development Association, and The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley.

The Boys and Girls Clubs applied for a $1.3 million workforce childcare grant from the Tennessee Department of Human Services.

The project is set to get a lesser grant of $954,000.

Houck said city Finance Director Gail Cook still needs to meet with state auditors to secure the grant.

The project, he said, already had about $500,000 from a federal Community Development Block Grant.

Houck said the city plans for the daycare to serve children of Clinton City, Clinton City Schools and Eagle Bend Industrial Park employees. He said the daycare program will be a more-affordable option for these families.
