Clean sweep
Wilkerson, McCormick lead in ACHS match
It was a week of mixed results for the Anderson County High School volleyball team.
The Lady Mavericks (6-7 overall, 4-2 District 3-AAA) split four matches in a weekend tournament and went 1-1 in league play.
After dropping a heartbreaker at Knoxville Central early in the week, Anderson County bounced back Thursday night with a sweep of Campbell County, 25-9, 25-9, 25-11.
Khloe Wilkerson and Lilly McCormick led the charge against the Lady Cougars. Both tallied seven kills, with Wilkerson adding 15 service points and three aces. McCormick notched three blocks as the Lady Mavericks rolled.
“It was important for us to come out and win that match,” ACHS Coach Jayme Smith said. “Especially after what happened to us at Central, where we didn’t play well.”
The trip to Fountain City proved frustrating for Smith and her squad. The Lady Bobcats claimed the first two sets before Anderson County rallied to force a decisive fifth.
Central held on for a 25-21, 25-20, 17-25, 22-25, 15-11 victory.
“I don’t want to take anything away from Central,” Smith said. “They played hard, and (Lady Bobcats Coach Susan Davidson) does a great job. She’s a good coach and they played really well.
“But I’m still upset about that one,” she said. “We tell our girls all the time that people are going to be coming for them, and I don’t think they took that seriously. I feel like we almost won that match, but we didn’t play very well.”
Wilkerson had nine kills and 18 digs against Central. Bethany Lowe chipped in eight kills, while Elle Long had five and McCormick finished with four.
The Lady Mavericks were scheduled to visit Gibbs on Tuesday. They return to league play Thursday at Oak Ridge, with first serve set for 6 p.m.
