ORHS soccer falls short in heartbreaker

Oak Ridge High School’s girls soccer team had a bitter-sweet match on Thursday night.

The bitter: The Lady Wildcats lost a chance to win the District 3-AAA district tournament championship in the most heartbreaking way possible.

After battling Powell to a 2-2 tie after 90 minutes of play and salvaging a draw, Oak Ridge lost the title 6-5 to the Lady Panthers, their arch-nemesis, on penalty kicks.

“That was really heartbreaking,” Oak Ridge Coach Trenna Underwood said. “I thought we played well.

“It was just so heartbreaking because this senior class at Oak Ridge had never won a district championship and they wanted to win one really badly.”

The sweet: All was not lost for the Lady Wildcats. They advanced to the Region 2-AAA tournament semifinals, where they were to play Bearden on Tuesday (results not available at press time).

“Playing Bearden is obviously not what we wanted, but we beat them previously and we know that they’re beatable,” Underwood said.

At Powell late last week, Hayven Laurendine scored both of the Oak Ridge goals.

“Hayven had the game of her life, and I thought we played really great,” Underwood said.

Oak Ridge advanced to the district championship match and the region tournament with a 3-1 victory at home on Tuesday, Oct. 14.
