ACHS gains experience on Gulf Coast court
Anderson County High School’s boys basketball team made a trip to Florida’s Gulf Coast recently, and the Mavericks faced a tall task as they competed without several key players who had just wrapped up the 2025 football season.
“We went with seven players, and then after football season was over, Elijah Johnson came down — his sister plays for the girls team — and he played a little bit and gave us an eighth (player),” Anderson County Coach Jordan Jeffers said.
“We played some great competition, and I thought the players played really hard,” he said. “I was really pleased with our effort. When we came back, we had our guys at practice, and we’re going to look a lot different. I don’t know if we’ll be better, but we’ll look a lot different.”
The Mavericks (1-3) opened play in the Sunshine State with a 76-58 loss to Cornerstone Christian (Texas).
“That’s a big private school,” Jeffers said. “They have over 2,000 students. The school is affiliated with John Hagee’s church. It’s his school.”
Cam Lawson led Anderson County with 21 points, while Colton Lawson added 13 against Cornerstone.
On Tuesday, Nov. 25, the Mavericks dropped a 58-49 decision to Northwest Rankin (Mississippi), a Class 7A school that recently won a Mississippi Class 6A state championship.
“Northwest Rankin is a good team,” Jeffers said. “They’re a 7A school, and they won a state championship in 6A.”
Cam Lawson again led ACHS with 15 points. Colton Lawson scored 11.
The Mavericks returned to action Tuesday night when they hosted Oneida. Results from that game were not available at press time.
Anderson County will travel to Northwest Knox County on Friday to take on Powell at Jeff Hunter Gymnasium. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
