Mavs, Dragons tangle in holiday tune-up

Both the Clinton High and Anderson County High wrestling teams were idle last week during the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Dragons and Mavericks will return to the mats this week, but both were in action Friday, Nov. 21, at Anderson County.

Clinton and Anderson County renewed their rivalry even though Mavericks Head Coach Matt Slone was absent while coaching in ACHS’s football game, a loss to Greeneville in the Class 4A state quarterfinals.

Although he and several wrestlers were unavailable for the duals against Clinton and Pigeon Forge, Slone said he was pleased with the Mavericks’ effort against their crosstown rival.

“We won all of our matches but two. I don’t know if it was an actual dual or if they just ran some guys out there,” Slone said. “We didn’t even send some of our guys out.”

Against the Dragons, Aiden Reed (113 pounds) won by fall. Zed Hulet (144) and Hayden Harrell (150) also notched victories for Anderson County. Clinton picked up wins from Nathan Black (190) and Jonah Hoskins (215).

“We had a lot of forfeits against Anderson County and Pigeon Forge,” Clinton first-year Head Coach Carl Nielsen said.

The Mavericks dropped their matchup against Pigeon Forge, 48-34. Reed, Max Wolfley (157), Edmond Presson (165) and Henry Linkes (190) each won by fall, while Hulet and Harrell earned technical falls.

Clinton, meanwhile, fell to the Tigers 72-11. Bryson Breeden, the Dragons’ 285-pounder, scored a pin, and Hayden Durliat (113) won by technical fall.
