Clinton High students create cookbook

Clinton High School student Lewis Seeber, left, designed the cover for a new cookbook he worked on alongside his fellow CHS students. Joining him are CHS Principal Robbie Herrell, student Alana Stegemiller, who also worked on the cookbook, and teacher Austin Sherwood.
Students in two Clinton High School classes have put together a cookbook to share with family and friends, full of recipes they gathered.

The students who worked on the project came from the classes of Austin Sherwood and Rita Honeycutt-Finley.

Sherwood told The Courier-News the project combined different life skills and academic subjects and involved the work of many paraprofessionals and peer buddies.

“We are always looking for meaningful, hands-on ways to teach our students skills they can use at home and in the community,” he said.

“Cooking and following recipes provide opportunities to practice reading, sequencing, measuring and working collaboratively. Creating a cookbook allowed us to take these vital life skills and present them in a fun, engaging project that our students could be proud of and share with others.”

Sherwood said the students talked about math when measuring ingredients, used English skills while writing and organizing the recipes, and explored basic science concepts by discussing what happens when different ingredients are mixed together.

“It was a great way for students to see how these subjects show up in everyday activities like cooking,” he said.

Sherwood said the students found the recipes from different sources. Some, he said were family recipes, including traditions passed down for generations.

Others students, he said, researched recipes for their favorite foods. All students in the two classes got a chance to participate and contribute to the book, he said.

The cookbook was available for the students to order. Sherwood said in early December he did not have any more copies, but hopes to get more soon.
