Facing some of Tennessee’s toughest competition, the Anderson County High School boys wrestling team had five athletes win medals at the Beatdown in the Mountains tournament, which concluded Saturday.

Five Mavericks reached the semifinals in their respective weight classes, and four claimed third-place finishes.

ACHS 113-pounder Aiden Reed took third in his division, as did Zed Hulet (138 pounds), Hayden Harrell (144) and Evan Pruett (175).

Max Wolfley, the Mavericks’ 150-pounder, placed fourth after forfeiting the third-place match because of an injury concern.

“We had five guys [who] technically finished third,” ACHS Coach Matt Slone said.

“Max finished fourth because we had him forfeit the third-place match due to an injury. It was purely precautionary, and he had pinned the guy earlier in the tournament.”

The field included several of the state’s premier programs.

Defending Class AA state champion Cleveland competed, along with perennial area power Knoxville Halls. Private-school standouts Boyd Buchanan and Lakeway Christian also were in the bracket.

“You had some good teams there,” Slone said. “Cleveland was there and they’re the best team in the state. Knoxville Halls was there. Boyd Buchanan and Lakeway Christian were there, and those are two of the top Division II teams. We’re pretty happy to have five placers, and with five guys technically finishing third, you have to feel pretty good about it.”

On Thursday, Anderson County swept three dual meets, defeating Sevier County, William Blount and Fulton.

“I don’t have the scores for those duals, but we won all three pretty handily,” Slone said.
