Maddox unleashed
Senior guard drops 57 in dominating win over Harriman
A record-setting performance by one of the area’s top players helped the Clinton High School boys basketball team begin the new calendar year on a high note.
Dragons senior guard Bryson Maddox poured in 57 points Friday night, breaking the program’s single-game scoring record and leading Clinton to an 85-62 victory over Harriman at the Don W. Lockard Gymnasium.
“He shot the ball really well,” Clinton Coach Chris Lockard said. “I think he hit nine threes. He shot it really well, and we played really well. Harriman played well too — they were just outmatched.”
Lockard, Clinton’s longtime coach, noted that Maddox has made an impact even when he hasn’t been the team’s top scorer.
“He’s always used to being our top scorer, but when we went up to our tournament in Kentucky, he played well,” Lockard said. “He’s used to being the man, but in Kentucky, he played well when he wasn’t the man. He rebounded well and he defended well.”
Along with his 57 points against the Blue Devils, Maddox pulled down five rebounds and had one assist.
Clinton opened the game with a 32-12 first-quarter outburst and never looked back.
Tristian Lundy added 10 points in the win.
Clinton closed out its trip to Bell County, Kentucky, with a 58-55 double-overtime loss to Georgetown on Tuesday, Dec. 30.
“Even though we lost that game in overtime, I thought we played well,” Lockard said. “That was a big game before us.”
Maddox scored 23 points against Georgetown. Lundy added 13 and Isaiah Williams finished with nine.
The Dragons edged Morristown East 49-47 on Dec. 29 behind Lundy’s 18 points. Maddox had nine, and Ben Tackett added eight.
Clinton fell to Southwestern (Kentucky) 79-58 on Dec. 27. Camden Nelson led with 13 points. Logan Hill scored 11, Williams had 10, and Lundy finished with seven.
The Dragons opened the Bell County tournament with a 58-52 win over Knox Central (Kentucky) on Dec. 26. Maddox scored 17 points. Nelson had 12, Braylen Hayden tallied eight, and Brendan Hayden added seven.
