Clinton High School’s boys basketball team kept its perfect District 4-AAA record intact with a pair of dominant victories last week.

The Dragons (20-7 overall, 5-0 in the district) opened the second half of league play Friday night with an 80-43 home win over Union County at the Don W. Lockard Gymnasium, completing a regular-season sweep of the Patriots.

While longtime Clinton Coach Chris Lockard is pleased with his team’s progress, he knows that the Dragons can’t afford to rest on their laurels or take any opponent lightly as the season continues.

“We’ve made some changes that have helped us offensively,” Lockard said. “We’re in first place, we just picked up our 20th win, but we’ve still got a long way to go to get ready for the (district) tournament.

“Our defense and rebounding are good, and I’m extremely proud of that. But we still have a lot of work to do.”

Against Union County, the game was tight early, with Clinton holding a 20-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. But the Clinton defense was stingy in the second frame as the Dragons all but put the game away, limiting the Patriots to just six points while pouring in 26 of their own to take a 46-20 lead into halftime.

Bryson Maddox once again led the Dragons’ offensive attack, scoring 18 points while adding seven rebounds and five assists.

Tristian Lundy tallied 14 points and grabbed eight boards as Clinton pushed its advantage to 68-29 heading into the fourth quarter.

Earlier in the week, Clinton routed Gibbs 79-45 on Tuesday, Jan. 20, jumping out to a 23-8 lead in the opening quarter and never looking back.

Maddox poured in 28 points and added four steals, three assists and three rebounds. Ben Tackett scored 10 points, while Lundy had seven points and eight rebounds. Braylen Hayden finished with six points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
