Travelers passing Anderson County Animal Hospital on Tuesday, Jan. 20, may have wondered about the large law enforcement presence as the parking lot filled with flashing Sheriff’s Office vehicles — but it wasn’t an emergency.

Deputies had gathered to honor a retired Loudon County K9 officer as the beloved service dog was compassionately helped across the rainbow bridge, the clinic said in a social media post.

Loudon County Sheriff’s Office K-9 dog Dante died at Anderson County Animal Hospital on that day.

“We have serviced Loudon and our surrounding county K-9 units for multiple years now,” an email from the hospital stated in response to The Courier News.

“The bond between a K-9 and their handler is something you can’t put into words, and Dante’s bond with Chief Deputy [Chris]Hutchens was truly special,” the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office stated on Facebook.

“For 11 years, Dante stood by his side through long days, difficult calls, and countless moments of service to this community,” Loudon County Sheriff Jimmy Davis said in the post.

“He wasn’t just a partner, he was family. Our hearts are with Chief Deputy Hutchens and his family.”
