That dream is about to become reality for the Mavericks’ offensive lineman. Humphrey recently signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his career at Southern University in Baton Rouge.
“Since I was really young, I always dreamed of playing football in Louisiana,” Humphrey said. “My dream school was LSU.”
While Southern may not be LSU, the Jaguars boast a new coaching staff led by head coach Marshall Faulk, an NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl champion.
“The biggest thing that appealed to me about Southern was the coaching staff,” Humphrey said. “I play on the offensive line and the offensive line coach, Donald Penn, has 14 years in the league, and I feel like he can teach me a lot of things.
“They have a whole new coaching staff and it’s a great coaching staff.”
Humphrey plans to major in business and marketing and said he is looking forward to smaller class sizes.
“My mom always told me to develop a relationship with my teachers,” he said. “I want to get to know my teachers so I can get help if I’m struggling.”
He also quickly felt at home on campus during his visit.
“It was a great campus when I went down there,” Humphrey said. “They’re renovating things and they told me that it would be like a whole new campus when I get there.
“But it was already a nice campus.”
Humphrey also considered Tennessee State and Southern Illinois before making his decision. He said he is relieved to have the recruiting process behind him.
“I also considered playing at TSU and Southern Illinois, and I’m glad that the recruiting process is over,” he said. “It was really stressful.”
