Lady Mavs weather Gulf Coast tourney test
After opening the 2026 season with four consecutive wins, the Anderson County High School softball team made a spring break trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Things didn’t quite go as the Lady Mavericks would have liked, as they dropped four of five games. They did, however, close their stay on a high note, notching a 4-2 victory over Pleasant Valley.
In that game, Bella Brummett, Alli McKamey and Marlea Finstad all had two hits. Brummett also scored a run, while Finstad had two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. McKamey finished 2-for-5.
In the circle, pitcher Addison Grooms had a solid outing as she threw six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. She finished with five strikeouts.
Anderson County opened tournament play with a 6-4 loss to Austin on Monday, March 16.
Alice Ogan went 1-for-2. She doubled, scored two runs and drove in another, while Reece Brock doubled and had two RBIs. Finstad also had two hits for the Lady Mavericks.
In a 4-2 loss to Clarksville, Anderson County committed three errors and managed just three hits. Ogan singled, scored and drove in a run, while Kara Waddell singled and had an RBI.
On Tuesday, March 17, ACHS lost to Alexandria Valley 6-2 in a game in which it collected eight hits. But the Lady Mavericks also committed six errors.
Cindle Justice went 2-for-2 and drove in a run, while Ashton Thurman went 2-for-4 with an RBI and stole a base. Ogan singled and scored a run.
The Lady Mavericks also lost to Benjamin Russell, 5-4.
Thurman had two hits in that game, while Justice singled and had an RBI, and Waddell doubled and scored.
ACHS Coach Lindsey Verner said the Lady Mavericks weren’t quite themselves as they played in unseasonably cold temperatures.
“We did some good things, but we did not play Anderson County softball,” she said. “That’s not the team that I know.
“We didn’t hit the ball well and we struggled to field the ball. I’m not making any excuses, but it’s hard to play when you’re playing and it’s in the 30s and the 40s.”
