Mavericks tested at Smoky Mountain Cup
It was a tough week on the pitch for the Anderson County High School boys soccer team.
The Mavericks (2-5) dropped four matches last week, but Coach Chris Curtin said his squad showed progress to close out the Smoky Mountain Cup in Gatlinburg despite a 2-0 loss to Giles County.
“I think we played one of our best games of the season against Giles County,” Curtin said. “We did a good job holding them down.
“They beat Kingston 2-0, so I was worried about that game, but our guys played well. That was really a 1-0 game, but we had a mistake that cost us a goal.”
In two other matches in Gatlinburg, the Mavericks lost to
Concord Christian.
“That was a winnable game for us, but Concord Christian had a great goalkeeper,” Curtin said.
“We had some good shots on goal, but he made some tremendous saves. I don’t know how he made some of the saves that he made.
“We competed well against them,” he said.
Anderson County had a tough start in Gatlinburg as it came up on the short end of an 8-1 decision against Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences.
“That was a tough game,” Curtin said. “The other two games were a breath of fresh air after the game against Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences.”
On Tuesday, March 24, Anderson County was shut out by Kingston 2-0.
“Kingston is a solid team,” Curtin said.
The Mavericks will host Austin-East on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
