And Clinton Coach Leonard Sams said his team needed the rest when it got it.
“We’re going to be playing a lot of softball this week,” Sams said after the Lady Dragons took the holiday weekend off.
Clinton played its last game Thursday night and defeated crosstown rival Anderson County, 5-4, in 10 innings at home. The Lady Dragons scored the winning run when the Lady Mavericks committed an error on the final play of the game.
Elizabeth Graham sparked the Clinton offense as she went 2-for-5 with a solo home run. Mandy Chambers doubled and scored against Anderson County in a game in which Sams said his squad didn’t play its best.
“I don’t think we played very well in that game, to be honest with you,” he said. “I thought we were tight and sometimes, those rivalry games can do that to you.
“I was proud of the way our girls handled the environment and got the win. They handled some adversity, and it was great to get the win.”
The victory over the Lady Mavericks may have been packed with anxiety for the Lady Dragons, but their 11-0 win over McMinn Central came a bit easier earlier in the week as three Clinton players collected two hits each.
Sara Bishop went 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. Mailia LaLuz went 2-for-2, drove in a run and scored once. Graham had two hits, including a double, and scored two runs. Ellie Kiely doubled, scored and drove in three runs.
Topanga Easterday had two hits and scored two runs. Chambers singled and scored.
