Lady Dragons clamp down, claim first place
The Clinton High School flag football team continued its dominance last week, and thanks to a big victory in a low-scoring game Friday night, the Lady Dragons enter this week perched atop the league standings.
Clinton took sole possession of first place with a 13-6 win over Bearden on Friday night as Addi Gamble scored a pair of touchdowns against the previously undefeated Lady Bulldogs.
Gamble had a 69-yard punt return for a score and was on the receiving end of a 68-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Lanee Carmichael.
“They’ve been undefeated all year and, of course, we have that one non-region loss,” Clinton Coach Brittany Siler said. “Bearden is a very good team, but our girls did what they had to do.
“That was one of our lowest-scoring games of the season.”
That was the second win of the week for the Lady Dragons, who also picked up a 40-7 victory over Gibbs.
Clinton scored 40 points despite running only 10 offensive plays.
“We ran 10 plays and we had 55 rushing yards,” Siler said. “They ran 58 plays and they had 209 rushing yards.
“If they would’ve kept running the ball, they might’ve done pretty well. But every time they threw the ball, we intercepted it or intercepted the ball and returned it for a touchdown.”
Gamble added two interception returns for touchdowns against Gibbs. Natalie White and Emilee Douglas also recorded interceptions for Clinton. The Lady Dragons scored two offensive touchdowns in the game, with Carmichael and White each finding the end zone on the ground.
