Clinton High School football player Ryker Armes will continue his academic pursuits and football career.

He made it official Monday, just five days before he walks across the stage to accept his high school diploma.

Armes signed a national letter of intent to play football at Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio.

He knows he’ll be a long way from home, but said the coaching staff made him feel at home at the school.

“It’s about six-and-half hours from here, an hour-and-a-half from Columbus,” he said. “I went up there on a visit and they talked to me, and they wanted me, and they kept texting me.

“I told my dad that I liked it, and he wanted to talk to the coaches, and he liked them.”

Armes will major in sports communications.

“I’m going to play running back up there,” Armes said.

“They have a good sports communications program up there.”

He wasn’t recruited much early in his high school career.

“The recruiting process went pretty slow at first,” Armes said.

“Then, about midway through my senior year, they really started coming in.

“My first offer was from Arkansas Christian Community College. I had 17 offers,” Armes said.

Most athletes have stressful times during the recruiting process, and Armes was likely no exception. But he wouldn’t trade his experience, he said.

“If I had any advice to next year’s seniors, I would tell them to enjoy it and don’t wish it away,” he said.
