“Ms. Portwood was a strong advocate for the completion of the Clinton High School girls’ softball field and recognized the importance of teamwork, discipline, and leadership opportunities that sports provide to young women,” the resolution to name the field stated.
It was passed unanimously at the June 11 Board of Education meeting.
Portwood’s daughter Magan Stout, in tears, accepted that resolution and another honoring her mother more generally from Board of Education members Dail Cantrell and Jo Williams.
“She would be honored,” Stout told The Courier News. “I’m very honored. I can’t say enough good things about the things that she’s done and how proud I am.”
“Your mom lived a fantastic life,” Cantrell told Magan. He said he knew Portwood from sitting next to her at every School Board meeting.
“She would make these crazy bets that I would always lose, and I would have to wear a Clinton hat,” he said. “But your Mom lived a life. She was a fantastic woman, and we all adored her.”
Portwood served on the board from Sept. 1, 2014, until her death.
“Ms. Portwood was a tireless advocate for academic excellence, student well-being, and community engagement, and was especially proud to support and champion the Clinton High School Dragons,” the resolution honoring her stated.
Anderson County Schools Director Tim Parrott said a bronze plaque will honor Portwood at the field.
