ROY E. WOODWARD

Roy E. Woodward, 84, Clinton, passed away Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at his home in Clinton with his wife of 61 years, Dorothy, by his side.

Roy was born in Nevisdale, Ky., to Millard and Lola (Siler) Woodward. He was the sixth of seven children. The family moved to Lake City when he was young, and he attended Lake City High School where he met his future wife Dorothy. Even as a young man, he loved being around children, and many of his and Dorothy's dates included Roy giving Dorothy's younger brother guitar lessons or taking one of Roy's nephews or nieces fishing. After their marriage in 1957 Roy worked mostly in the insurance business, which led to them traveling to many different cities and making friends along the way. In retirement, they returned to East Tennessee and settled in Clinton. His family and friends will always remember his generosity, sense of humor, and devotion to his loved ones.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his siblings, Earl, Neal, Jay, Faye Perry, and Patsy Guyton.

He is survived by: Wife, Dorothy; daughter, Robin (Lee) Cravey; son, Neal (Cindy) Woodward; beloved granddaughters, Mary Woodward and Hannah Cravey; sister, Winnifred Becker; and many nieces and nephews.

The family is planning a private memorial service at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

CAROLYN BRADLEY

Carolyn Bradley, 74, Clinton, passed away Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Carolyn enjoyed having yard sales. She also enjoyed finding bargains at flea markets and yard sales.

Carolyn was preceded in death by: Parents, Raymond and Elizabeth Phillips; and brother, Fred Foust.

She is survived by: Husband, Richard Bradley of Clinton; son, Phillip Richard Bradley of Clinton; brother, Carl Foust and wife Dorris of Powell; and grandson, Dillon Bradley of Clinton.

At Carolyn’s request there will be no services for her.

HUBERT DUNCAN JR.

Hubert Duncan Jr., 96, Clinton, passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2019, at his home in Clinton.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 – 1946. Hubert was a PFC, in the Anti-Aircraft Unit and fought three major battles, Normandy, France, and Rhineland. His family had a business, Duncan Coal Company, that he helped own and operate. He loved his family and was very proud of his children and grandchildren and enjoyed sharing stories with them about growing up in Clinton. Hubert was an avid hunter and fisherman and helped build the Alcoa Plant. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Clinton.

Hubert was preceded in death by: Parents, Hubert and Eva Duncan; brothers, Chalmer Duncan and Carl Lester Duncan; and sister, Louise Hankins.

Hubert is survived by: Wife of 62 years, Lorene Johnson Duncan of Clinton; children, Jeanne K. Duncan and fiancé Mike Houston of Maryville, Lora Nickell and husband Mark of Smyrna, and Hubert Duncan III of Clinton; six grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and special daughter-in-law, Brenda Duncan of Clinton.

The family would like to thank Avalon Hospice for the great care they had given Hubert during his illness. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital.

Hubert’s family received friends from 5 – 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, in the chapel of Jones Mortuary with his funeral service following at 7 p.m. with Mark Nickell and Keith Nickell officiating.

Hubert’s interment was at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, at Farmer’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Clinton with full military honors.

LEROY TAYLOR JR.

Leroy Taylor Jr., 55, Lake City, passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2019, at his home.

Jr. was born on Sept. 10, 1963, to Leroy and Joyce Roach Taylor. Jr. enjoyed watching dirt track racing, Duck Dynasty and the Andy Griffith show. He loved playing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Jr. was preceded in death by his dad Leroy; and daughter-in-law, Samantha Taylor.

Survivors: Wife of 36 years, Kathy Taylor of Lake City; sons, Corey Lee Taylor of Lake City, Leroy Drake and Nakita Taylor of Lake City; grandchildren, Corbyn, Bryson, Collyn, Coltyn, Mason, Shealyn and Easton Taylor; mother, Joyce Taylor of Caryville; brothers, David Taylor of Vasper, Bryan and Jessica Taylor of Lake City, Jason and Jessica Taylor of Johnson City; sisters, Gail and Roger Hawkins of Lake City, Wanda Branam of Jacksboro;a host of other family members and friends that mourn his passing.

Visitation will be from 6 – 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, at Hatmaker Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, in the Hatmaker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charlie Mac Marlow officiating.

The family will meet at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, at Hatmaker Funeral Home to go in funeral procession to New Vasper Cemetery, Vasper, for an 11 a.m. graveside service.

BETTY HUMPHREYS CLARK

Betty Humphreys Clark, 77, Kingston passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, at Parkwest Medical Center.

She was born March 11, 1941, in Sweetwater and has been a lifelong resident of Roane County. She loved spending time with her family and especially treasured every minute spent with her grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: Husband, Fred (Junior) Clark; parents, Paul and Clara Plemons Humphreys; brothers, Walter and Bob Humphreys; sisters, Christine Crabtree and Lucille Forrester.

Survivors: Daughter, Angie Hartley and husband, Joe of Kingston; son, Freddy Clark and wife Melissa of Kingston; grandchildren, Alex Lunsford and husband Lucas, Meg Hartley and Blake Hartley; brothers, Don Humphreys of Kingston, Tommy Humphreys and wife Debbie of Kingston; sister, Lavonna Breazeale and husband, Gary of Kingston; sisters-in-law, Sarah Humphreys of Kingston, Margaret Hall of Harriman; a host of extended family members and friends.

MADELINE C. LOCKHART

Madeline C. Lockhart, 86, went to her heavenly home Jan. 1, 2019.

Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her throughout her life and ultimately gave her peace. She was a member of Riverview Baptist Church in Claxton.

Madeline was born to the late Fred and Carrie Cox of Claxton. Growing up in Claxton, she enjoyed playing with paper dolls, horseback riding and being outdoors. She was married to the late Amos Lockhart for 36 years. Their sons John, Mike and Darrell made life never boring, sometimes challenging and always an adventure. As a family, they enjoyed traveling and family game nights.

Along with being a loving mother and caring for her family, she was a caregiver in her community and a talented and gifted artist/woodworker, selling her crafts locally. While she loved scrapbooking her photographs, quilting was, by far, her greatest passion. She designed and created countless quilts that are being enjoyed across the country and overseas. As a wonderful cook she was most known for her delicious red velvet cake, whose secret recipe was only shared with her beloved granddaughter, Samantha. She found strength, encouragement and peace in her daily Bible reading and devotions.

Preceded in death by: Sister, Mary Bean; and brother, Elmer Cox.

She leaves to cherish her memory: Faithful companion of 24 years, Bill Fraker; sons, John (Shanna) of Clinton, Mike of Gastonia, N.C., and Darrell of Claxton; grandchildren, Samantha, Alex and Tayler; five great-grandchildren; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

Her life was blessed by faithful friends and devoted neighbors. The family would like to thank Madeline’s doctors/nurses and the University of Tennessee Hospice for their “above and beyond” care.

PAUL EDDIE HAYES

Paul Eddie Hayes, 87, Caryville, passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2018, at his residence.

Paul was born June 20, 1931, in Pioneer to the late Sherman and Maude Ford Hayes. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church. He loved Jesus and his family, especially his grandkids. Paul was the vice president of Open Arms Ministry. Paul served in the US Army. He enjoyed fishing, woodwork, spending time with family and friends. Paul never met a stranger.

In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by: Brothers, Earl, Eugene, Leon, Ernest, and Walter Hayes; and sisters, Beatrice Sexton, Lois Baker, Pauline Menis, Kathline Cormila, Faye Walpole, Virgie Waggan, and Edna Boggs.

Survivors: Wife, Anna Leonard Hayes of Caryville; son, Walter Hayes and Cindy of Caryville; daughter, Tracy Long and the Rev. Henry Long of Vasper; grandchildren, Josh Hayes, Brittany Hayes, Brandon Bowman, and April Carr; great-grandchildren, Jaelyn Hayes, Kaysin Hayes, and Skylar Carr.

Visitation was held from 4 – 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, at Hatmaker Funeral Home.

Funeral service was at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, in the Hatmaker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Reese, and Pastor Tony McAfee officiating.

Family and friends met at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019, at Hatmaker Funeral Home at to go in procession to the New Vasper Cemetery in Caryville for an 11 a.m. interment.

CRIS McKAMEY AKERS

Cris McKamey Akers, Clinton, formerly of San Antonio, Texas, passed away at home Dec. 31, 2018.

She was born in Harlan, Ky., on Feb. 6, 1934, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Clinton.

She was preceded in death by: Parents, Robert and Grace (Childs) McKamey of Harlan, Ky., formerly of Knoxville; one brother; and three sisters.

She is survived by: Husband of 63 years, William; son, Jeffery Akers and wife Teresa of San Antonio, Texas; son, Gregory Akers and wife Valeria of Henderson, Nevada; grandson, Jack Akers of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two sisters living in California and one sister in Ohio.

Cris was educated in Kentucky and Ohio and being married to a career military man her employment and volunteer work varied at different military bases. She joined husband Bill at Shaw Air Force Base (AFB) in Sumter, S.C., in 1955 and lived there until 1964. During that time she did substitute teaching and conducted audio testing for elementary children.

Both sons were born at Shaw AFB Hospital and she was later a Cub Scout Leader and Den Mother. Her husband did a 13 month tour in Korea from 1960 to 1961 returning to Shaw AFB. They received orders for Eglin AFB in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., in 1964 and lived there until 1968. Their next assignment was to MacDill AFB in Tampa, Fla., from 1968 to 1972. Since both children where now in school, Cris decided to seek employment. She took a three months advanced course in accounting at Sawyer College of Business in Tampa and was employed by the Base Exchange Accounting Department where she worked until 1972.

They moved to Wiesbaden Air Base in Germany in 1972 until 1977. During that time Cris was hired to co-manage a Federal Credit Union Branch for Andrews Federal Credit Union out of Washington, D.C. She held that job for five years. The next assignment came in 1977 to Richards-Gebaur AFB in Kansas City, Mo. Due to the base closing, they were only there a few months and was re-assigned to Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas.

Cris was employed by Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union where she retired as Assistant VP/ Manager after 20 years. They moved to Clinton in 1998 and Cris said she felt like she was coming home. She spent summers in Clinton and Oak Ridge during her childhood and teens years visiting relatives.

There will be no funeral but the family received friends at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home from 5 – 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019.

In lieu of flowers, Cris request memorials be made to the Christian Service Center at First Baptist Church.
