BOBBIE SOWDER BAIRD

Bobbie Sowder Baird of Clinton took the hand of her Lord and Savior on Aug. 17, 2017, at Morning Pointe Assisted Living in Clinton.
Bobbie left with her husband’s spirit exactly seven years after his death on Aug. 17, 2010.
She was born to John C. and Christine Sowder on Dec. 22, 1928 in Wooldridge (Campbell County). She was one of five siblings. She graduated from Jellico High School where she played basketball. She married the love of her life, Millard Baird, on May 23, 1948. She was baptized and was a dedicated member and Sunday School teacher at the First Christian Church of Jellico until the family moved to Clinton in November 1970.
In Clinton, the family joined the Second Baptist Church where she was a faithful and active member for over 40 years. She was also a member of the Lioness Club along with Millard who was a member of the Lions Club. While her children were in school, she was active in several parent-teacher organizations.
Bobbie is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Millard, and her parents along with her siblings: Zita Sowder Abrams, Christine Sowder Sproles, Donnie Sowder, and Buddy Ed Sowder.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert M. Baird and Patricia W. Baird; her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Baird Williams and John D. Williams; her grandson, Robert Patrick Walker Baird, who lives in Nashville; and her granddaughter, Andrea Jean Williams, who lives in Clinton. Bobbie was proud of her two grandchildren. She is also survived by several neices and nephews along with special friend Nel Shrader. Her dear friend and Patty Baird’s mother, Ethel Gladys Walker, passed on July 31, 2017.
The family received friends at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017 from 2-3:30 p.m. and a brief Celebration of Life Service followed. Interment immediately followed at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Clinton.
The family extends its gratitude to the dedicated team members of Covenant Hospice, Morning Pointe of Clinton, and the University of Tennessee Medical Center Hospice. The family very much appreciates the support and love given to Bobbie over the past few years of her illness by the Jan Cox Sunday School Class of the Second Baptist Church. Juanita Irwin Crosby went to be with her Heavenly Father on Aug. 20, 2017 and is resting peacefully after struggling with acute dementia over the last eight years.
Her family showered her daily with loving care, many prayers and much love.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel C. Crosby; granddaughter, Lisa Duncan Hunley; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Ann Crosby; sons-in-law, Walter C. George and Robert Tavenner and grandson-in-law, Timothy Hunley.
The scripture befitting Juanita is II Timothy 4:7-8, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the LORD, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day-and not me only but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
Juanita was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Andersonville and a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 369. She graduated from the University of Tennessee with honors. Born Oct. 17, 1919, she was the only child of James Polk and Elizabeth Heatherly Irwin.
She was a direct descendant of Frances “Pioneer Frank” Irwin who was a resident of the State of Tennessee before 1800 and was also a direct descendant of Robert Irwin who settled in Tennessee prior to state-hood, June 1, 1796. Juanita was very active in the Daughters of the American and First Families of Tennessee and contributed to a number of books on genealogy as she was an avid dedicated historian, researching ancestries and family tree.
Juanita is survived by daughter, Elizabeth George Tavenner of Clinton; son, Samuel Irwin Crosby and Tammy Atkins of Knoxville; daughter, Judy Crosby Duncan and husband Jerry of Kingston; grandchildren, Tim George and wife Sonya of Andersonville; Sam George of Clinton and Jim George of Louisville, Ky.; Marty Duncan and wife Vickie of Knoxville; Neil Crosby and wife Elizabeth of Rockford; Kevin Crosby and wife Sonya of Clinton; Dawn Crosby George and husband Steven of Knoxville; great grandchildren, Justin Hill, Jacob Duncan and wife Callie; Jordan Duncan Soderholm and husband Steve; Kendall Crosby Weichold, Taylor Crosby, Abby and Reagan Crosby; Emily and Will Crosby; Riley and Zach George; Christopher, JoLeeAnn, Bobby and Jayna George; great-great grandchildren, Jacob and Thomas and Elijah and Garrett.
Juanita’s graveside service will be held at the Andersonville Cemetery on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017 at 11 a.m. In Lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to First Baptist Church of Andersonville 3949 Andersonville Hwy Andersonville, TN 37705.

George Taylor Riggs, age 94 of Clinton went to be with his Savior on Aug. 21, 2017. George was born in Coal Creek on July 9, 1923 to George Thomas and Sarah Sharp Riggs. He was a long time member of South Clinton Baptist Church. George was an avid sports fan and a well-known walleye fisherman. He was interested in local politics and the administration of government issues in Clinton.
He is preceded in death by parents as well as a son, Gary Keith Riggs.
Left to cherish his memory are wife Bobbie Martin Riggs, daughter Susan Weaver and husband Gary, daughter Debi Fox and husband Tommy, son Robert Riggs and special friend Elaine Shipe, daughter Cindy Lollar and husband Philip, and daughter-in-law Jean Riggs; grandchildren, Dennis Sharp and wife Waynette, Jeremy Pyatt and wife Melissa, Meagan Hipshire and husband Travis, Lance Pettiford, and Tessa Lollar, and great grandchildren Tanner and Kami Sharp and Mason, Evan, and Isaac Pyatt.

Elizabeth Fox Bolton, 94, Manassas Va., formerly of Clinton, passed away Aug. 8, 2017, at Novant Health UVA Haymarket Medical Center in Haymarket, Va.
She was born to Thomas Wilson Fox and Elizabeth Strong Fox in Jeff, Kentucky. The Fox family moved from Kentucky to Tennessee in 1931 where they lived on the family farm on Edgemoor Road where the Centennial Golf Course is currently located. The family moved from the farm to Clinton in support of the war effort. She graduated from Clinton High School where she was voted “Most Popular Girl”. She was an avid bowler and won numerous bowling titles and championships. She was a two-time Virginia State Doubles Champion and participated in over 45 WIBC Tournaments held throughout the United States. Elizabeth was a member of the Manassas Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by: Husbands, 2nd Lt. Sherrill R. Williams, Walter R. Brummett, and Earl A. Bolton; son, Walter R. “Bobby” Brummett Jr.; sisters, Dorothy Margrave, Hazel Brown, Bessie Smith and Bertha Jenkins; her brothers William and Henry Fox.
She is survived by: Daughter Cheryl Williams Hall of Jonesboro, Ga.; son, Johnny Bolton and wife Nancy of Nokesville, Va.; sister, Minnie Manley of Selma Ala.; brother, Fred Fox and wife Onah of Clinton; grandchildren, Edward Hall and wife Chevelle of Newnan, Ga., Robin Shockley of Los Angeles, Calif., Elizabeth Sahley and husband Chad of Los Angeles, Calif., Alicia Wagner and husband Joe of Winter Haven, Fla., Michelle Hudson and husband Jesse of Manassas, Va., Jonathan Bolton and wife Nicole of Catlett, Va., Jacob and Catie Bolton of Manassas, Va.; ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Breeden Lett, age 75, of Knoxville, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Aug. 10, 2017. Dorothy was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. She was retired from Hoskins Drug Store.
Dorothy is preceded in death by parents U.L. and Frances Breeden; brothers, William “Bill” Breeden (Evelyn), Tommy Breeden and Richard Breeden; sisters, Gerry Clark (James H.), Zelma Hill and Betty Ann Breeden; brother-in-law Robert E. Clark.
Dorothy is survived by husband Ralph Lett; daughter Lisa VanDeGriff; step-daughter Lisa Weaver (Martin); grandsons Preston Weaver and Payton VanDeGriff; sister Louise Clark; and several nieces and nephews.

Wilma W. Phillips, age 91, of Heiskell, went to be with the Lord Aug. 13, 2017. Wilma was born in Knoxville on March 4, 1926.
She graduated from Clinton High School and continued on to receive a Business degree from Knoxville Business College. Wilma was married to Dan H. Phillips on April 6, 1958; they were married 36 years. Wilma worked as a Film Technician for Technical Information Center in Oak Ridge.
She enjoyed singing gospel music and playing piano at her church. She was a long time member of Glory Way Baptist Church in South Clinton.
She is preceded in death by husband Dan H. Phillips; son Danny Gene Phillips; parents George Newton Walker and Annabelle Walker; and brother Eugene Walker.
Wilma is survived by daughters Darlene (Randy) Hawk, and Diane (Jerry) Wilkerson; grandchildren Jerry Wilkerson, Shannon Wilkerson, Trisha Nelson, Jessica Wilson, Emily Hawk, Anna Mae Kitts, Rebecca Wilkerson, and Alex Hawk; eight great grandchildren; caregiver and special friend Barbara “Sis” Dixon of Heiskell.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at Mynatt Funeral Home Halls Chapel with a service to follow. Brother Larry Tilley and Brother Jess Ward officiating. Herbert Lockwood Tudor, 78, Clinton, passed away Monday, Aug. 14, 2017.
He was born Aug. 27, 1938, in Union County. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where he formerly served as Choir Director. Herbert enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was the owner and operator of New Loyston Memorial Gardens.
Preceeded in death by: Loving wife of 51 years, Edna Tudor; parents, Lex and Martha Tudor; brothers, Johnny, Jerry and J.C. Tudor; sisters, Sara Lee Tudor and Helen Warwick.
Left to cherish his memory are: Daughters, Rebecca Wilkerson and husband Tony, Sandra Longmire and husband Charlie; grandchildren, Brittany Wilkerson, Kayla Wilkerson, and Matthew Longmire; sisters, Margie Fraker (Carl), Trula Ogle, Marylynn Champion; brother, Hobert Tudor; and many nieces, nephews, and long- time friends.

ETHEL GLADYS HILL WALKER

Ethel Gladys Hill Walker, Oak Ridge, died in her home on Sunday morning, July 30, 2017, at the age of 93.
Gladys was born March 31, 1924, in Lee County, Ky., to parents Minnie May Davis Hill and Charles Dewitt Hill.
She and her six siblings were raised in Primrose, Ky. She taught all eight grades in a one-room school house at Primrose after receiving her teaching certificate from Lee Junior College. In 1944, she and her sister, Gean, went to Oak Ridge, to work for the summer as part of the war effort. She decided to stay in Oak Ridge and was one of the first group computer programmers for Union Carbide. Gladys retired from Y-12 in 1985 as a section head for the Computer Sciences Division. Gladys met her husband of 61 years, Everett C. Walker, on a blind date arranged by her sister, Gean, and a dear friend, Rembert Harris. Their daughter Patty was born in Oak Ridge in 1957.
She leaves behind friends and family including: Patty and her son-in-law Robert Baird of Clinton; grandson, Patrick of Nashville, to whom she was “Gaga” for 28 years; her very special niece, Bennie Phillips of Murphy, N.C.; sister-in-law, Sally Rae Hill of Irvin, Ky.; numerous nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Joyce Carroll and Bobbie Baird.
She was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church of Oak Ridge where she taught Sunday school for many years.
Gladys was preceded in death by: Husband; parents; brothers, Virgil, Kerney, and Charles Hill; and sisters Sally Rogers, Gean Merriman, and Frieda Hill.
The family would like to recognize the sweet care provided to Gladys by the ladies of Visiting Angels Knoxville and Covenant Hospice.
The family received friends beginning at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, 2017, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton, with a service beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Interment was at Oak Ridge Memorial Park, followed by celebration of life reception for friends and family at Calhoun’s in Oak Ridge.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a memorial for Gladys Walker sent to Big Brothers Big Sisters of East TN.
