PATRICIA 'TRISH' CARPENTER

Patricia ‘Trish’ Carpenter, 54, Clinton, left this world unexpectedly, Jan. 9, 2023.

She was born to Dianne Walden, and Walter ‘Buddy’ Walden, Oct. 18, 1968.

Trish was known to make the best sweet tea and was a great cook. She loved reading and working puzzles with her ‘Mommy Dear.’ Trish loved camping and caving with her husband and children. She was a very supportive, giving person and never saw the fault in others. Trish was looking forward to the birth of her great-grandson.

Trish wass preceded in death by: Father, Walter (Buddy) Walden; father-in-law, David Carpenter; three children she never got to hold in this world; and grandparents.

She is survived by: Husband, Otis (Buggsy) Carpenter of Clinton; daughter, Jessica Carpenter and her children Johnny, Hailey, Casey and Cody; son, Billy Carpenter and his children Davey and Noah all of Solway; mother, Dianne Walden of Clinton; mother-in-law, Vickie Carpenter; sisters, Melissa Davis (Michael) of Clinton, Sheila Langford (Robert) of Clinton, Cheryl King of Clinton, and Amy Walden Duncan (Slick Rick) of Solway; brothes-in-law, James Darren Messamore (Tina), and Larry Carpenter; sisters-in-law, Nancy ‘Sissy’ Messamore and Margie Carpenter; and lots of nieces and nephews.

Services were held Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at Mott-McKamey Funeral Home and Cremations.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, Jan. 15, 2023, at Staff Sergeant Cornelius Carter Cemetery in Clinton.

BRUCE THOMAS CARDEN

Bruce Thomas Carden, 73, Lake City, passed away Jan. 9, 2023, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 3, 1949, to Zelmer Carden and Della Thompson Carden. Bruce is of the Baptist faith and a deacon and trustee of his church. He loved four wheeling along with fishing.

Bruce was preceded in death by: Parents, Zelmer and Della Thompson Carden; brothers, Glenith Carden, Junior Carden, Leonard Carden; sisters, Reba Daniels, Betty Jo Beach, and Louise Harlas; and sister-in-law, Gaye Carden.

He is survived by: Wife of 55years, Nancy Duncan Carden of Lake City; son, Thomas Lynn Carden and wife Elaine of Caryville; brother, Ellis Carden of Clinton; sister-in-law, Brenda Duncan Wilson; grandchildren, Ashley, Kay Ann, Matthew, Emily; great-grandchildren, Shirley May, Sophia, James; a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visitation was from 1 – 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at the Hatmaker Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, in the Hatmaker Funeral Home Chapel in Lake City with the Rev. Kenny Sharp and the Rev. Paul Smith officiating.

JAMES ROBERT ALTUM

James Robert Altum, 50, Clinton, passed away unexpectedly at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023.

James was full of life and personality, and he was loved by many. He was a talented guitarist, but above all he deeply loved his children. James will be remembered as a warm and welcoming person who had a great sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by: Mother, Patricia Jane Altum; wife, Kimberly Suzanne Altum; brother, Cecil Edward Altum.

James is survived by: Father, Robert Lee Altum; son, Caleb Nathaniel Altum of Knoxville; daughter, Gabrielle Altum of Knoxville; brother, Bobby Ray Altum of Clinton; sister, Wendy Bishop and husband Eddie of Oak Ridge; nieces, Emily and Caitlin Roberts; nephews, Steven and Timothy Altum; best friends, Jamie Beach, Tommy Vanhuss, and Gene Toney; special friend, Krystal Collins.

The family will receive friends in the Chapel of Jones Mortuary from 6 – 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, 2023.

His memorial service will begin at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Jim Ault officiating.

ACE JOHN CARROLL JR.

Peacefully and surrounded by his family, Ace John Carroll Jr., passed away Jan. 7, 2023, at the age of 68.

Ace grew up in Clinton and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. After his years of service, he followed in his father’s footsteps by working in the HVAC industry, a field where he later became a known expert and worked for more than 50 years. No matter if it was peers in his line of work or his customers, he never hesitated to help others if called upon.

Ace enjoyed life, his family, and many friends. He loved good food, a good fishing spot, and trying to grow a good garden. He was adored and loved by all who knew him. He had a heart of gold, and his kindness knew no bounds.

Ace is survived and missed beyond measure by: Loving wife of 30 years, Carol.

He is forever cherished by: Three sons, Colton Carroll (Haley Burnett), Brandon Carroll (Jenna), and Ace John Carroll III (Heather), and daughter, Misty Brown (David); grandchildren, Darby, Tom, Jake, Mollie, Maggie, Grayson, A.J., and Conner; as well as brothers, Dusty Carroll (Paula) and George Carroll (Debra) and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn and Ace John Carroll Sr.

The family will receive friends from 1 – 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, 2023, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.

TERESA L. SMITH

Teresa L. Smith, 52, Clinton, passed away Friday, Jan. 6, 2023, surrounded by her family.

She was born July 23, 1970, in Lake City. Teresa loved yard sales, couponing and pocketbooks.

She was preceded in death by: Grandparents, Vester and Rosie Lively; and mother-in-law, Clara Smith.

Teresa leaves behind: Husband of 36 years, Israel Joe Smith; children, Kari, Jacob, and Matthew; mother, Linda Edmonds; and brother, Scott and Heather Sharp.

Visitation was held from 5 – 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2023, at Hatmaker Funeral Home Chapel.

MARY LOU FOWLER

Mary Lou Fowler, 82, Clinton passed away Jan. 6, 2023, at her residence.

Mary was born in Anderson County Dec. 22, 1940, to Hubert Melton and Lorene Vandergriff.

She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Clinch River Baptist Church. She loved working with flowers and spending time with friends and family.

Mary was preceded in death by: Parents, Hubert and Lorene Melton; son, Kent "Worm" Shultz; husbands, Jerry Shultz and Kelly Fowler.

She is survived by: Son, Rick Shultz and Shona of Lake City; grandchildren, Ashley Shultz of Lake City, K.C. Shultz of Lake City; very special friend Barbara Shultz; great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Kolton Wilson, and Nellie Garner

AUDE CLIFTON FOUST SR.

Aude Clifton Foust Sr. passed away Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, at the age of 88 with his wife, Betty Jean, and children by his side in Clinton.

He is with his Lord and savior Jesus Christ. He was born Dec 30, 1934, to Berlin and Ester Foust in Clinton. He was a devoted husband, caring brother, who loved his children and grandchildren very much. He never met a stranger he was friendly to any one that he came across.

He enjoyed serving the Lord as a member of Blowing Springs Baptist Church where he was a trustee and the choir director for several years. If there was singing, he and his wife, Betty, were there. He wrote a song titled, “Tears on the Alter.” He was a member of Clinton Chapter of Gideons International.

He graduated from Clinton High School in 1952. He was a member of the Tennessee National Guard reserve from 1953 - 1956. He was a volunteer firefighter for the Clinton Fire Department. Most of his working career was spent as the owner/operator of Foust Garage on Main Street in Clinton, where he rebuilt transmissions from 1960 until retiring in 1999. This gave him more time to work in his garden, raise cattle, do wood working, and travel across the country. He also enjoyed boating, NASCAR and camping. For several years he would take his family camping, he felt vacations were important so he would close his shop for vacation each year and go on an adventure.

He volunteered with the local Boy Scout troop for several years. He provided dinners for the North Clinton Elementary PTSA turkey dinner benefit for several years. He was very active with the Anderson Country AARP. He always enjoyed his work at the fair where he volunteered in the Home Décor Department. He enjoyed family gatherings at Christmas and the 4th of July where up to 50 family members would gather at his home to celebrate and reconnect with family members as they came for the celebrations. He could always stay busy clearing his property and cutting timber for the house he built. He enjoyed operating his high lift and any other heavy equipment.

Preceded in death by: Parents, Berlin and Ester Foust; sister, Nina Hembree; the mother of his children, Magdalene Foust; grandson, Charles Avery Henry lll; granddaughter, Heather Foust; great-grandson, Gage Foust-Jackson; and great-granddaughter, Sophia Adkins.

Survived by: Wife, Betty; sister, Lucile Wright of Clinton; children, Aude C. Family and friends will meet at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, and go in funeral procession to Grandview Memorial Garden for a 2 p.m. interment.

ROBERT HOUSTON SWALLOWS 'BOBBY'

Robert Houston Swallows "Bobby,” 67, born Aug. 29, 1955, Knoxville, passed away peacefully with his family by his side Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023.

Bobby was one of a kind that could light up a room with his smile, his kind heart, and infamous laugh. Bobby was able at a young age to do what he loved for a living as a golf pro and as a golf instructor at Dean Hill and Fox Den Country Club. He later worked several years at United Printers of Knoxville and Git-N-Go of Clinton.

However, following Bobby's own recovery 12 years ago, Bobby found his true calling in life and that was to walk alongside others in recovery. He was gifted in sharing his testimony for Christ with such humility, grace, and excitement. Bobby found joy in life and shared it freely with those he met, and if you were blessed to be loved by Bobby, you knew it without doubt.

Bobby was preceded in death by: Parents, Pearl and Albert Swallows; and longtime friend David Pickell.

He is survived by: Wife of 14 years, Jolynn Newhouse; son by marriage and daughter-in-law, Alicia and Mark Newhouse; grandchildren, Weston Newhouse (9) and Adalyn Newhouse (7); sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Scott Vowell; niece and nephew-in-law, Autumn and Mark Sanderson; and great-nephews, Breck Sanderson (9) and Trey Sanderson (5).

Bobby's celebration of life began with receiving friends from 3 – 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023, followed by a service at Faith Promise Church. located at 10740 Faith Promise Lane, Knoxville.

In honor of Bobby's love of the Tennessee Volunteers those attending were asked to join in wearing Big Orange.
