WALLACE 'WALLY' PERRY BROADWELL JR.

Mr. Wallace “Wally” Perry Broadwell Jr. passed away at a nursing facility in Clinton on Christmas Day, 2020.
Born Jan. 9, 1924, Wally had been living until early December at Meadow View Senior Living in Clinton. Marie Modlin Broadwell, his beloved wife of 68 years, predeceased him in 2017. His daughter, Alicia Kay Broadwell Porter (Clinton) has been faithfully supporting him during his medical problems over the past year, despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. He is also survived by his son, David Kimball Broadwell (Chapel Hill, N.C.), four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Kay and her husband, Wallace Porter, have been blessed with two sons, Samuel and Aaron. Samuel and his wife Susan have two daughters, Addison and Emily, and Aaron and his wife Lynnsey have two daughters, Elearie and Ilah.
Wally’s son Kim is married to Christine Wilmot, and they have a son, Gregory. Kim also has a daughter, Jessica Whitney, who married Pascal Desmangles earlier this year.
Wally and Marie raised their family in the Atlanta, Ga., area before moving to Norris in 1989. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, who knew him as a generous, loving man devoted to caring for and providing for his family. A member of the South Clinton Baptist Church, Wally was a man of deep faith. He taught his children by example, and treated others with the respect and honesty everyone deserves, but seldom gets. He was an air traffic controller at the FAA’s Atlanta Center before his retirement in 1977 and was an artist, an accomplished photographer, and an avid sports fan. Go Falcons!
Wally served his country in the Navy as a radioman during World War II aboard the escort carrier USS Kalinin Bay. In 1944 his unit fought in the brutal Battle off Samar in the Philippines. At the tail end of the convoy, his poorly armored ship took hits from the largest battleship in the Japanese fleet and also the first kamikaze attacks of the war. Leaving the radio shack moments before his fellow radioman was killed by an 18-inch shell from the Yamoto, he continued to do his job under heavy fire as two carriers around him were sunk. His group of ships fought so well the Japanese believed they were up against a much larger enemy and withdrew, losing the last major naval battle of the war. But he never wanted anyone to think of him as a hero.
The family would like to give special thanks to Pam Forgety, Rhonda Morton and the entire staff of Meadow View for the years of attention and care they bestowed on Wally, especially since the death of Marie and during our current pandemic.
Arrangements will be made by Holley Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton, where friends can sign the guestbook on their website. The family will have a private graveside service with a Celebration of Life service that will be held at a later date.

LUCIOUS CLYDE SHROPSHIRE

Lucius Clyde Shropshire, 82, Loudon, was born in Charleston, S.C., in 1938.
Lucius passed away Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2020. After school, Lucius served in the United States Air Force. He then went into sales with a company from New York, selling lab equipment until he retired in the 1980's. After retirement, he and his beloved wife of 31 years spent time sailing their boat all over the Caribbean, island hopping for many years.
Lucius was preceded in death by: Parents, Lucius A. and Myrtice (Satterfield) Shropshire; sister, Sarah Ellen Jones; and brother, Bevo Shropshire.
He is survived by: Loving wife, Judy Shropshire; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Sean Key; granddaughters, Isabella and Sophia; brother, Sam Shropshire; nephew, Sid Shropshire, who lived with him for several years; and other nieces and nephews.
The family will plan a memorial at a later date.

SUSAN ANN ROACH HEDDEN

Susan Ann Roach Hedden, 70, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loving family Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2020, at her home after a courageous, 18-month battle with lung cancer.
Susan was born July 31, 1950, in New York City, N.Y., to Richard T. Roach and Marion Hertz Roach.
Susan graduated from Clinton High School in the class of 1968 where she was a member of the National Honor Society and a varsity cheerleader. She attended the University of Tennessee and later graduated from Knoxville Business College. She worked many years in banking with Hamilton National Bank and then United American Bank in the corporate banking division. She was involved with the planning of many events that were sponsored by United American Bank in preparation for the 1982 World’s Fair.
Susan was a proud member of The Wednesday Club of Clinton for several years. She looked forward to attending the monthly meetings during the year. The many new friendships she formed during her time with the club were very dear to her.
Susan enjoyed and worked tirelessly on many Clinton High School Class of ‘68 reunions over the years. She loved getting together with all her friends and classmates in the reunion planning committee to work out the details of another successful class reunion for all her classmates. A special thanks to all the members of the planning committee. She loved you all.
One of Susan’s favorite hobbies was gardening. Each year she could hardly wait for warmer weather to arrive so she could get started planting. Her ability to choose and arrange all the different flowers and plants was amazing and the beauty of her plantings were enjoyed every day.
The Christmas season was always very special to Susan. She loved decorating her home and the Christmas tree. She would prepare the most beautifully wrapped presents and would always buy extra presents just in case someone unexpectedly would visit. She didn’t want anyone to be left out.
Susan was preceded in death by: Mother, Marion Roach; father, Richard Roach; grandparents, Herbert and Margaret Hertz; uncle, Thomas Hertz; and cousin, Tommy Hertz.
Susan is survived by: Husband of 46 years, Don Hedden; aunts, Margie Shepard, of Dunedin, Fla., Carol Hertz of Clearwater, Fla.; cousins, Christine Kubic and Eric Hahn of Palm Harbor, Fla.; brother-in-law, Henry Hedden III (Lily) of Marysville, Wash.; sister-in-law, Martha Payne (Mark) of Clinton; niece, Heather McPherron (Nate) of Cheyenne, Wy.; nephews, James Hedden of Seattle, Wash., and Richard Hedden of Macon, Ga.
A very special thank you to Bonnie Shoemaker for checking in with Susan often and keeping her spirits high. Their phone conversations brought comfort to Susan.
A special thanks to Dr. David Aljadir and Dr.Vaughn Dill, and their dedicated staff, at the University of Tennessee Cancer Center for their valiant efforts treating Susan’s cancer. A special thanks to the University of Tennessee Hospice for their assistance and comfort that was provided during the final days.

VON EDWIN WILSON

Von Edwin Wilson, 88, Clinton, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2020, at his residence.
He was born June 20, 1932, in Clinton to the late Jasper and Dottie Seeber Wilson. Von was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Deep Spring Baptist Church and Andersonville Valley Masonic Lodge # 383. Von was a devoted husband, wonderful father and grandfather. He spent his life, 50-plus years, touring the world, all over the U.S. and Canada, he had four million miles safety awards. Von drove for Trailways for 26 years, was the co-owner of Knoxville Tours, owner of Wilson Tours, and then went on the drive for Rocky Top Tours.
In addition to his parents, Von was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Wilson.
Survived by: Sons, Eddie Wilson and wife Phyllis, Robbie Wilson and June Bollinger, Mike Wilson and wife Tonya; grandchildren, Jeffery Wilson, Mark Wilson, Stephanie Boyd, Chad Wilson, Haley Marcum, Blake Wilson and Heather Jeffries; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; special friend, J.B. Brewer and wife Diane.

Larry Engelman, 50, Powell, went to be with the angels on Monday, Dec. 21, 2020.
Larry was born in Columbus, Ohio, and was a senior HVAC technician at Covenant Health.
Larry was full of life, had a huge heart, always had a smile on his face, and never met a stranger. His latest endeavor was blacksmithing, where he built his own homemade forge and blacksmithing tools. This is where he showed his love and creativity through the items he made for so many people. He also enjoyed water-polo, cooking barbecue for friends and family, healthy discussions with his best friends, but most of all, watching The Ohio State football games.
Larry is survived by: Wife, the love of his life, Melissa Engelman; fur baby, Bindy; parents, Chuck and Sandy Engelman; brother, Jerry Engelman; sister-in-law Paige; nephew, Michael; nieces Megan and Molly; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Larry’s wish was to be cremated, which is being handled by Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.
We are holding off on services at this time but will plan a celebration of Larry for friends and family the summer of 2021 in Tennessee and another in Ohio.

PHYLLIS DIANE (OVERTON) COPELAND

Phyllis Diane (Overton) Copeland, 73, departed this earthly life Dec, 21, 2020, at her home in Knoxville after a brave fight with cancer.
Phyllis was born the second child to Joe and Rubye Overton of Clinton, May 27,1947.
She grew up in Clinton and attended Glen Alpine School and Norris High School before attending St. Mary’s School of Nursing. She went to work as a trauma nurse in the ER at Chattanooga Memorial. She moved back to Oak Ridge and worked as a surgical nurse at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge and later as administrator at Tennessee Valley Eye Center in Knoxville. Phyllis worked at the Anderson County Health Department, where she retired in 2015.
Phyllis enjoyed meeting with both long time and new friends and family. She adored her husband and three grandchildren. She spent much of her free time devoted to and caring for her family.
She is survived and dearly missed by: Husband of 33 years, Paul Jackson Copeland; daughter, Shannon Elise Wilson and husband Patrick; siblings, Larry E. Overton Sr., David W. Overton, and Janice Overton Branson; stepchildren, Renee’ Pemberton and Robert Copeland; grandsons, Dylan Pemberton and Max Wilson; and granddaughter, Ada Mae Wilson; nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate the life of Phyllis will be planned for a later date.

ARCHER V. CORDER

Pastor Archer V. Corder, 81, Clinton, departed this life Monday, Dec. 21, 2020, at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.
Born Sept. 13, 1939, he was the son of the late Robert Doyle and Opal Vertie Corder; brothers, Douglas C. Corder, James Leon Corder, Gene Allen Corder; sister, Margaret Ann LaRocco; and nephew, Barry Doyle Corder.
Pastor Corder was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and pastor. His commitment to family and Christ was evident to anyone who knew him. “Archie” gave his heart to Christ in 1973, eventually becoming a licensed minister with the Assemblies of God. Retiring from K-25 to begin pastoring full time, he founded Christian Outreach Center and Christian Outreach Academy two years later. He devoted more than 47 years to Christ, 24 as senior pastor. He also served as chaplain for the Anderson County Sherriff’s office for several years. Retiring in 2004, he enjoyed camping and additional time with his family and dogs. He could often be seen supporting his great-grandchildren at ballgames while continuing to share Christ with anyone who would listen. Prayer by means of intercession was his passion that continued throughout his life.
His memories will be cherished by: Wife, Wanda Faye Corder; daughters, Kimberly Richards and Vanessa Lynn Dycus; sister-in-law, June Corder; granddaughter, Brittnie Leah Lucas; grandsons, Randall Vance Young, Brandon Chaye Stitt, and Cody Allen Garner; two great-granddaughters; five great-grandsons; and a host of nieces and nephews and he was a replacement grandfather for many.
The familyreceived family and friends from 5 – 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, 2020, with funeral immediately following at 7 p.m. at Clinton Church of God in Clinton.
The processional for the burial began at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, 2010, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton and burial followed at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Clinton at 2:30 p.m.
Pastor Curtis Akers and Randall Young officiated, Brandon Stitt sermon gave the sermon.

Mary Ruth Jones, 79, Clinton, passed away at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville Dec. 21, 2020.
She was a generous, strong-willed person with a great sense of humor. She was a devoted wife and mother who loved her family very much. Mary was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by: Parents, Billy and Rosalee Hill; husband, Fred Jones; and son, Timothy Clayton Jones.
She is survived by: Sons, Clifford Carlell Jones and Cory Shane Jones; daughter, Rose Marvell Phillips (Larry); and numerous other extended family members and friends.
